Netchemia Excels in Providing Tracking Software to School Districts

A lot of people talk about improving the educational system in the United States. There are plans, programs and ideas introduced every day on how we can make changes. Netchemia is a company that has taken the challenge to heart and is working on the problem, rather than just talking about it.

The 9-year-old company develops software to help school districts reduce paper, eliminate redundancies and track progress of students and programs more efficiently. Its mission is to transform the way education works through technology.

 

Cocoa Dolce, iSi Environmental Receive National Award

WICHITA — Two Wichita companies have been named recipients of the U.S. Chamber's Blue Ribbon Small Business Award.

Cocoa Dolce Artisan Chocolates and iSi Environmental Services are among 75 recipients of the national award for 2010.

The award recognizes small businesses that have fewer than 250 employees and gross revenue of less than $20 million in 2008.

Recipients are selected for the award based on staff training and motivation, community involvement, customer service, and business strategies and goals.

 

Archer Technologies Founders Put Money in Kansas City Tech Firms

Less than two months after selling Archer Technologies LLC, co-founder and CEO Jon Darbyshire is pouring some of the proceeds back into the local technology scene.

Darbyshire said Feb. 22 that he and his wife will invest around $200,000 in each of five area companies — a total of about $1 million.

After combing through a group of eight candidates, Darbyshire chose AthletixNation Inc., ImmunoGenetix Therapeutics Inc., Mygistics Inc., KC BioMedix Inc. and Data Locker LLC.

“I always had the intent of creating a little incubator here in Kansas City where we bring companies together ... and try to get them off of paper and implement them to a point,” he said. “It’s not just becoming an angel investor; it’s becoming a mentor and helping the companies become successful.”

EcoFit Lights the Way for Growth

Lenexa-based EcoFit Lighting's leaders hope that 2010 is the year the company flips the switch from being a small startup to becoming a key player in the growing and highly competitive energy-efficient lighting industry.

The pieces appear to be there: Full-scale production of its LED-based technology began at a Lee’s Summit factory in December, more than 60 cities are using EcoFit lights in pilot projects, and outside investors have poured in about $1.5 million in the past two months.

EcoFit CEO Cason Coplin said the company should generate $10 million in revenue this year, compared with sales in the “tens of thousands” in 2009.

 

Filling the PIPELINE: Entrepreneurs Discuss Fellowships

In its third year, the Kansas Pipeline Entrepreneurial Fellowship Program continued its mission to provide some of the state’s most promising startups with the right foundation for further growth.

Executives from eight Kansas businesses were chosen from hundreds of applications and put through a series of quarterly three-day education sessions on subjects ranging from ways to organize their finances to how to improve how they communicate their business to customers and potential investors.

The class members also got access to high-level business mentors and venture capitalists.

The leaders of six Kansas City-area businesses have been selected to participate in a program aimed at nurturing some of the most promising entrepreneurs in Kansas.

The Pipeline entrepreneur fellowship program, formerly called the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp. (KTEC) Pipeline program before receiving nonprofit status in May, announced this year’s class of 10 members during its annual Innovator of the Year ceremony Thursday night in Overland Park.

The 2010 fellows include: Bryan DiGiorgio, CEO of WorkSpace Communications, Overland Park; Jay Kim, CEO of Data Locker Inc., Lenexa; Stuart Jackson, CEO of Analyze Direct Inc., Overland Park; Bob Collister, CEO of MemoryShowcase.com, Lenexa; David Barnes, president of SweetSpot Marketing, Overland Park; and Jeff Southard, vice president of drug development for VasoGenix Pharmaceuticals Inc., Lenexa.

Four Wichitans get PIPELINE Fellowships

OVERLAND PARK — Four Wichitans were among the 10 Kansans selected for the Pipeline technology entrepreneurship fellowship — the most since its inception.

The announcement of the 2010 Pipeline Innovators was made Thursday night at Pipeline's Innovator of the Year event at the Overland Park Sheraton, which drew about 400 people, organizers said.

Jason Tatge of Lenexa-based Farms Technology was named the 2009 Innovator of the Year.

The Wichitans named to the 2010 Pipeline class are: Tahir Ahmad, CEO and founder of PetroPower; Nate Gregory, CEO of MoJack Distributors; Jeremy Jones, president and CEO of Nitride Solutions; and Ben Tyson, president and CEO of Time Trails.

System to Coordinate Traffic Lights

Motorists navigating rush-hour traffic through the Evans Town Center should find the commute somewhat easier starting this week.

At 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Columbia County road officials will switch on a new traffic light system that enables the signals to coordinate stop and go lights.

"It's continually monitoring traffic and making all the adjustments it needs to do to keep traffic running smoothly," said county Construction and Maintenance Services Director Matt Schlachter.

Entrepreneur Training Gets Expanded Scope

Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp. is expanding its 2-year-old program that grooms promising entrepreneurs. KTEC has started PIPELINE Primer, which takes the formal training classes PIPELINE offers to its innovators each year and compresses them into a two-day event. The first primer will be June 25-26 in Kansas City, followed by one in Wichita July 14-15.
